About
Carola Hölting ist seit fast 30 Jahren als selbständige Tanz- und Theaterfotografin/-videografin vornehmlich in Deutschland tätig. Tanz war immer ein besonderer Schwerpunkt Ihrer Arbeit und seit einiger Zeit fokussiert sie sich ganz auf den Bereich Tanz. Das Projekt "The story(s) behind the pictures" startete 2021 im Rahmen des Förderprogramms "Neustart Kultur" Hilfsprogramm DIS-TANZEN.
Das Archiv
Von 1992 bis 2003 hat Carola Hölting ausschließlich analog fotografiert, darunter Tanz-Uraufführungen von Joachim Schlömer, Philippe Talard, Andris Plucis, Richard Wherlock, sowie Aufnahmen aus der Vaganova Ballettakademie St. Petersburg und Produktionen von freien Gruppen. Das analoge Fotomaterial ist zum Großteil noch nicht digital erfasst. In den letzten Jahren sind zudem Fotos von Choreografien von Pina Bausch, William Forsythe, George Balanchine, Alexei Ratmansky, Nacho Duato, Ohad Naharin, Bryan Arias, Emmanuel Gat, Jefta van Dinther, Sharon Eyal und Alexander Ekman hinzugekommen. Die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Choreografen und ehemaligen Forsythe-Tänzer Andris Plucis dauert bis heute an und bildet eine fast nahtlose Dokumentation seiner Arbeit aus den letzten 20 Jahren.

Der Tanz, die Live-Performance findet in der Gegenwart statt, niemand kann sie zurückbringen, wenn sie einmal vorbei und abgespielt ist. Was bleibt, ist die Erinnerung daran, in den Köpfen der Zuschauer, der Beteiligten und das archivierte (Bild-)Material. Damit das Archiv nicht nur der Vergangenheit verhaftet bleibt, sondern auch die Lücke zur Gegenwart und Zukunft schließt, werden mit einzelnen damals beteiligten Personen Interviews über ausgewählte Produktionen geführt. Welche Erinnerungen werden bei den Beteiligten wach? Welche Geschichten und welche Personen verbergen sich hinter den Bildern und Szenen?
Inwieweit können Bildwerke von vergangenen Tanzperformances die heutigen Tanzschaffenden zu neuen Ideen inspirieren? Und welche Assoziationen hat eigentlich jemand zu einem Bild, der das Stück niemals gesehen hat? Können diese Interviews und Geschichten im Zusammenspiel mit dem aufbereiteten Bildmaterial eine Inspirations- und Informationsquelle sein für heutige Kreative?

Processing selected dance photographs (1992 - today) and supplementing them with interviews with participants
About
Carola Hölting has been working as a freelance dance and theatre photographer/videographer for almost 30 years, mainly in Germany. Dance has always been a special focus of her work and for some time now she has been concentrating entirely on dance. The project "The story(s) behind the pictures" started in 2021 as part of the funding programme "Neustart Kultur" aid programme DIS-TANZEN.
The Archive
From 1992 to 2003 Carola Hölting photographed exclusively in analogue, including dance premieres by Joachim Schlömer, Philippe Talard, Andris Plucis, Richard Wherlock, as well as photographs from the Vaganova Ballet Academy St. Petersburg and productions by independent groups. Most of the analogue photographic material has not yet been digitally recorded. In recent years, photos of choreographies by Pina Bausch, William Forsythe, George Balanchine, Alexei Ratmansky, Nacho Duato, Ohad Naharin, Bryan Arias, Emmanuel Gat, Jefta van Dinther, Sharon Eyal and Alexander Ekman have also been added. The collaboration with choreographer and former Forsythe dancer Andris Plucis continues to this day and forms an almost seamless documentation of his work over the last 20 years.

In order for the archive not only to remain attached to the past, but also to close the gap to the present and the future, interviews will be conducted with individual people involved at the time about selected productions. What memories are awakened in those involved? Which stories and which people are hidden behind the images and scenes?
To what extent can images of past dance performances inspire today's dance makers to new ideas? And what associations does someone who has never seen the piece actually have with a picture? Can these interviews and stories, in combination with the prepared visual material, be a source of inspiration and information for today's creators?
